Karen K. Melton, PhD
Associate Professor of Child and Family Studies

Dr. Karen Melton is an applied researcher specializing in designing and evaluating structured experiences—programs, events, and interventions—that foster human flourishing. With a commitment to evidence-based practices and practical applications, Melton is a sought-after consultant and thought leader recognized for her ability to translate cutting-edge research into tools and frameworks that drive real-world impact.
Melton has published more than 45 peer-review articles and edited chapters. Her work in experience design and human flourishing focuses on three key areas: shared experiences that foster social connection; developmental experiences that shape character and faith; and experience measurement, which involves developing and applying valid tools in real-world settings. She has contributed to several projects funded by the John Templeton Foundation and Lilly Endowment, where she played a key role in translating cutting-edge research into practical, actionable strategies, e.g., Cultivating Character: A Toolkit for Assessing Virtues in College Students. She shares this expertise as a co-mentor in the Science of Virtues Lab.
Her early career research on shared experiences earned international recognition for her insights into the mechanisms of family activities and their impact on social connectedness. Her scholarship has been featured in over 100 domestic and international media outlets, including Time, GQ, Good Morning America, MarketWatch, Baptist Standard, and US News & World Report. She is also the co-creator of Intentional Family, a family life intervention designed to foster connection and intentionality in family dynamics.
